Valerius Living

Project at MVSA

The Valerius Living project is located in the stately Amsterdam Oud-Zuid district. The new building follows the contours of the former Valerius Clinic and forms a U-shaped volume that is bordered by the Valeriusplein, the Valeriusstraat and the Lassustsraat.

The exterior of the U-shaped volume is designed in richly detailed brick, which corresponds to the characteristics of the monumental buildings in the area. The interior of the U-shaped volume encloses a green courtyard and, in contrast to the brick exterior, is designed to be transparent and open.

Richly Detailed Brick Façade

The exterior of the U-shaped volume refers to the detailing of the monumental buildings in Amsterdam Oud-Zuid. The façade has a clear 3 division; a plinth in natural stone, a middle section with and a clear upper pert with a recessed façade and a horizontal canopy.

The plinth is made of natural stone with fully glazed façade openings and stainless steel frames. The middle section is made of a silver-dark brick with vertical lesenes, recessed surfaces above the façade openings with high windows and  stainless steel frames and balustrades. On the Valeriusstraat, the façade is finished at the top with recessed windows and a horizontal canopy with louvers against the sun. On the Lassusstraat, the brick façade is finished with double-height rececced window openings and the lesenes fold nicely into brickwork lintels. Between the high masonry volumes on Lassustraat, the façade with balconies recedes with an extra setback and a horizontal canopy at the top.

Light Colored Courtyard

The inside of the U-shaped volume is light and transparent in contrast to the outside.

The beautifully designed garden enclosed by the U-shape gives a feeling of peace and privacy in the busy city. The living areas of the apartments with spacious terraces and slender detailed sliding doors are situated on the inner garden, the terraces are an extension of these living areas.

The front of the cantilevered terraces are finished with ceramic tiles from Koninklijke Tichelaar. Rectangular tiles with an asymmetrical pattern reflect the light in various directions and give a soft glow to the light in the green inner courtyard.

Care and Relaxation

Valerius Living focuses on elderly residents and offers support from the adjacent care hotel, which operates separately but is part of the complex.

The interior has been designed with great care and attention, using light shades of natural stone and bronze accents. The basement has a swimming pool, gym and wellness. On the ground floor on Lassusstraat, social and neighbourhood-oriented functions are situated. These functions are accessible from Lassusstraat.
